In addition to the famous city of Petra in Jordan, the ancient city of Hegra, located in the northwest region of Saudi Arabia, is also of significant importance for understanding this ancient culture.
Hegra, known as Al-Hijr in Arabic, was the capital of the Nabataeans in Arabia. The city has been standing for centuries, but it has not been visited as much as other historic cities and visitations have only recently begun.
Lost city has become an attractive tourist spot
In addition to ancient buildings carved into the rock, Hegra is home to an impressive necropolis, where some 115 tombs have been carved into the sandstone.
One of the highlights is the famous Qasr al-Farid, a tomb approximately 22 meters high. The rock-hewn tombs are impressive testaments to the skill and ingenuity of the Nabataeans.
Although it has been inhabited for centuries, visits to Hegra only became accessible in 2019, when Saudi Arabia started issuing tourist visas and investing in the region.
The city of AlUla, an oasis near Hegra, plays a central role in this effort, becoming a center for arts, culture and tourism. The region, along with the historic city of Hegra, offers visitors the opportunity to explore the rich heritage of the Nabataean civilization.
