There are many benefits of a good night's sleep. Poor sleep quality is capable of causing harm to an entire society, as the World Sleep Society has warned. Therefore, last Friday, the 17th, it was recognized as 'World Sleep Day', addressing topics about the importance of sleep for health.
This year's theme is "Sleep is essential for health", an awareness project that has been running since 2008. Several medical specialists on the subject in more than 60 countries are gathered, carrying out activities to address and remember the importance of sleep in the routine.

the importance of sleep
Sleep is the main source of mental, physical and energetic repair for human beings. Various body functions are rewarded and restored during the nightly rest period. When there is no quality sleep or when the person does not sleep, mental, physical and emotional problems can begin to arise.
In Brazil, from the 13th to the 19th of March, specialists are moving to organize awareness lectures at universities. Despite being restricted to university students, everyone can access the online content organized by the associations.
This year's Sleep Week Booklet was organized by the Brazilian Sleep Association (Absono), by the Brasileira de Odontologia do Sono (ABOS) and the Associação Brasileira de Medicina do Sono (ABMS) and is available by quite from this link.
The associations Absono, ABOS and AMBS have put together a list that highlights what a good night's sleep can provide:
- Decreases the risk of cardiovascular disease;
- Decreases the risk of diabetes;
- Release hormones;
- Decreases the risk of depression;
- Regulates mood;
- Helps in concentration and learning;
- Reduces stress;
- Strengthens the immune system;
- It assists in body weight and controls obesity.
All these benefits disappear when there is no quality sleep. Specialist Mônica Muller, Master in Sleep Medicine and professional for 23 years, says she has faced a big problem with their patients, because most of the cases that present themselves are people with an accumulation of tasks.
“They are mood changes, especially for people who are pre-disposed or already have psychiatric disorders, with anxiety and depression being the main ones. She also cites bipolar mood disorder, where sleep deprivation is extremely harmful and can trigger episodes of mania. Fatigue and extreme tiredness must be avoided at all costs”, said Mônica Muller.
