Vietnam authorities took the decision to ban commercial screening of the film'Barbie', directed by Greta Gerwig and produced by Warner Bros.
That decision came about because of a scene in the film that features a map with the so-called “nine-dashed line,” which represents China's territorial claims in the South China Sea.

Vietnam considers this representation a violation of its sovereignty. The film, which stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken, respectively, it was one of the most anticipated of the local summer and was scheduled to be released in the country on July 21st.
Vi Kien Thanh, director general of the Vietnam Film Bureau, announced that the ban on commercial screening of the film 'Barbie' has been decided by the National Board of Film Evaluation.
This decision was made in accordance with the country's regulations and policies. So far, Warner Bros. made no comment on this ban.
Territorial dispute and politics prohibited the exhibition
It is true that many countries neighboring the China, including Vietnam, have overlapping territorial disputes and competing claims in the South China Sea.
These issues have been a source of controversy and tension in the region for decades. In 2016, a United Nations dispute resolution court in The Hague issued a unanimous decision that questioned the validity of the so-called “nine-dash line” advocated by China.
However, while the court's decision was final and binding, the implementation of its rulings faces challenges due to the lack of clear mechanisms to ensure compliance.
China has stated that it does not recognize the court's decision and continues to assert its territorial claims in the region.
This geopolitical context influences the reactions of the countries involved in relation to issues such as the exhibition of films and series, as well as the publication of books that address this sensitive subject.
