The case was discovered by a lawsuit filed by the local government. In the year 2022, the Pocheon City Government of Gyeonggi initiated an investigation into the safety of children aged three years and under, due to the concern generated by the Covid-19 pandemic.
During that investigation, authorities noticed that a months-old girl had not undergone medical examinations for a year, which raised suspicions. Upon investigating in detail, the heinous crime committed by her parents began to emerge.
Parents left dead baby in a pot
When authorities tried to contact the mother, she was reluctant to cooperate, hampering the investigation process. After several attempts, they managed to contact her, however, at that moment, she lied saying that her daughter was under the care of a relative.
The local government decided to report the child missing to the police as the mother refused to bring the child in for a proper check. This mother's attitude created additional obstacles for the authorities who sought to clarify the case.
In Seoul's Seodaemun district, the child's body was discovered by police inside a suitcase hidden on the roof of a low-rise residential building.
To hide the corpse, the plastic container, commonly used to store kimchi, was used. Interestingly, this residential building is home to the woman's ex-husband's parents.
During a thorough investigation, it was revealed that the child passed away in January 2020 due to neglect. It turned out that the mother often left the child home alone while visiting her ex-husband, who was serving a sentence at the time.
The investigation revealed that she had left her son alone on approximately 70 occasions since 2019, traveling about five hours to the prison to visit her ex-husband. During that time, the child received only three of the 18 mandatory vaccinations, and her mother never took her to the hospital when she was sick.
After the child's tragic death due to continued neglect, the mother hid the body in the container, enlisting the help of her ex-husband.
As a result of this crime, her mother was sentenced to seven and a half years in prison, while her ex-husband received a sentence of two years and four months.
