Check out the ideal sleep time for adults
Researchers analyzed data from more than 500 million adults aged between 38 and 73 in the UK and China. All were interviewed about their sleep habits, mental health and well-being, and underwent cognitive tests. Although there is no conclusive proof, the reasons why older people sleep more weakened appear to be complex, influenced by a combination between our genetic makeup and the brain structure.
Other studies found that elderly people who have difficulty falling asleep and go through night awakenings are more likely to develop dementia or die prematurely from any reason. Experts also explain that lack of sleep can cause the accumulation of amyloid, a protein that can lead to the development of mental disorders.
Recommended sleep benefits for adults
The importance of sleep increases as we age and we need it just as much as the younger generation, but it's harder to find. The study had some flaws and limitations, such as the lack of measurement of the number of times people slept during the night and the non-inclusion of other health problems that are already present in the lives of volunteers.
The amount of time we sleep, our preferred sleep times, and the number of times we sleep together at night vary greatly between individuals and as we age. Sleep is dynamic and we all have different patterns, so the most important thing is to find out what your needs are. However, in general, experts recommend that adults get about 7 to 9 hours of sleep a day.
