The country is committed to supporting promising startups and large companies in the field of Artificial Intelligence, in addition to promote discussions on universal basic income, as AI-driven automation makes some jobs obsolete.

Nishimura emphasized that as AI evolves and robots, drones, autonomous vehicles and other devices play more prominent roles, people will have more free time. To boost the development of AI training processors, Japan is seeking capacity in this area.

The leader in this sector is Nvidia Corp., a graphics chip maker that became the most valuable chip company in the world due to its early focus on Artificial Intelligence. The minister expressed a desire to create a company in Japan that surpasses Nvidia in this area.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is also strongly supporting the domestic semiconductor sector, betting on changing geopolitical priorities to help Japan regain its long-lost leadership position in the chip industry.

The Japanese government is providing billions of dollars in subsidies to triple the country's chip production by 2030. In addition, a government-backed fund is working to strengthen the country's chip supply chain.

Japan has a long history of public discussions about the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on society. The country is currently drafting guidelines for the use of generative AI, but Prime Minister Kishida has stated that these regulations should not slow down AI progress. According to him, it is not an “all or nothing” choice.

During the symposium, billionaire founder of SoftBank Group Corp., Masayoshi Son, also expressed enthusiasm. Son mentioned that the Vision Fund, the world's largest technology investment fund, is seeking new investments after suffering billions of dollars in losses related to AI betting.

"It's time to discuss what it means to be human when we are no longer the most intelligent life form on the planet," said Son. “This is the time for Japan to focus all its efforts on AI.”
