End of the Covid-19 pandemic: WHO announces end of emergency

O end of world emergency of the Covid-19 pandemicwas declared by WHO, the World Health Organization, this Friday (5).

The announcement was made after the 15th meeting of the International Health Regulations (IHR) Emergency Committee. Today it was official end of the Public Health Emergency of International Concern.

More than three years ago, on March 11, 2020, the WHO declared the Covid-19 pandemic.

The organization warns that this officialization ends the emergency situation of the disease, but not the Covid-19 itself. In this sense, the WHO reinforced the importance of nations to strengthen the immunization system against the infection.

Covid-19 pandemic in numbers

The Covid-19 pandemic caused diverse impacts on different social sectors, public health, economy, culture, politics, among many others.

This was the biggest pandemic in a hundred years in the world. The numbers show the dimension of the disease and how much it has affected the lives of human beings in every corner of the planet.

  • More of 640 million cases of the disease;

  • Almost 7 million deaths;

In Brazil, the disease left more than 700 thousand deaths and more than 37 million registered cases.

The first case of the disease was registered in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December 2019. On January 13, 2020, the first case of Covid-19 outside China was identified.

With 100,000 cases worldwide, WHO officially declared the Covid-19 pandemic on March 11, 2020.

End of the worldwide emergency of the Covid-19 pandemic: what changes?

The WHO highlighted recommendations to be followed by countries in order to remain vigilant about the health system, as well as to prepare for future pandemics.

The agency's recommendations are:

  • Inclusion of vaccination against Covid-19 in the immunization program;

  • Strengthen health surveillance programs;

  • Foster scientific research in health.
