How to Turn Minutes into Hours

To transform minutes into hours, you need to know that 1 hour corresponds to 60 minutes. Therefore, we can conclude that 120 minutes corresponds to 2 hours, 180 minutes to 3 hours, and so on.

Note that to convert from minutes to hours just divide the value by 60 and to transform from hours to minutes we do the opposite operation, that is, we must multiply by 60.

So, for example, to transform 510 minutes into hours let's divide by 60, so we have:

510: 60 = 8.5 hours

Using rule of three

We can still use a rule of three applying the relationship between hours and minutes. This is very useful when we are in doubt whether the operation to be performed is division or multiplication.

To build the rule of three we will call a column of minutes and the other of hours, putting x in the unit we want to transform.

Example

1) How many hours correspond to 2400 minutes?

Solution

To convert to hours let's set up a rule of three, as indicated below:

Example 1 convert from minutes to hours

Multiplying "in cross" we have:

60. x equals 2 space 400.1 x equals 2400 over 60 x equals 40 space

Therefore, 2400 minutes corresponds to 40 hours.

2) How many minutes correspond to 18.3 hours?

Solution

In this case, we will put the x in the column corresponding to minutes. So the rule of three will be:

example 2 three hour minute rule

Solving the rule of three:

x equal to 60.18 point 3 x equal to 1 space 098

We have that 18.3 hours corresponds to 1 098 minutes.

Transformation from minutes to seconds

In the same way that we can transform minutes into hours, we can also convert minutes to seconds and vice versa, where 1 minute is equal to 60 seconds.

Considering this relationship, we have, for example, that 100 minutes corresponds to 6000 seconds and that 7200 seconds corresponds to 120 minutes.

Note that in the first situation we multiply by 60 and in the second we divide by 60, that is:

minute and second graph

We can also transform hours to seconds, in this case, just consider that 1 hour is equal to 3600 seconds.

Solved Exercises

1) Doing physical exercises for 45 min a day for 30 days, how many hours will be spent per month to do these exercises?

First let's multiply the 45 min by 30 to find the total time spent in the month:

45.30 = 1350 minutes

Now, we have to transform the minutes into hours, for that, just divide by 60:

1350: 60 = 22,5

Therefore, it will be necessary 22.5 hours to do the exercises.

2) A party started at 19 h and 10 min and ended at 23 h and 45 min. How many minutes did the party last?

Let's subtract the two times informed, so we have:

stack attributes charalign center stackalign right end attributes row 23 h nothing 45 m i n end row row minus 19 h nothing 10 m i n end row horizontal line row 4 h nothing 35 m i n end row end stack

Multiplying 4 hours by 60 we get 240 minutes. Adding to 35 minutes, we find 275 minutes that was the length of the party.

3) In a school, each class lasts 50 minutes and each class has 6 classes per day. Knowing that there is a 30-minute break, calculate how many hours students spend each day at this school.

Being 6 lessons of 50 minutes each, then, per day it is 50.6 = 300 minutes. Adding to the 30-minute break we have 330 minutes at school.

To transform this value to hours, we would divide by 60, so 330: 60 = 5.5 hours.

Therefore, students spend a day 5.5 hours in this school.
