Do you have doubts in nominal agreement or want to test if you already know everything about the topic? So, you came to the right place.

Practice with these exercises and clarify everything in the answers commented by our expert teachers.

question 1

(FCC) They _____ provided the certificates, which sent _____ to the proxies, as _____ instruments for the purposes collimated.

a) same, attachments, enough
b) same, attached, quite
c) same, annex, a lot
d) same, attachments, a lot
e) same, attachments, a lot

Alternative to: same, attachments, plenty.

  • "themselves" must agree with the name to which it refers, therefore, it is correct to say "themselves".
  • This is what happens with the word "attachment" which, in this case, agrees with "attestations": "attached certificates".
  • "enough" must agree with "instruments": "enough instruments". Remembering that "a lot" only does not vary when it is an adverb. For example: They study a lot.

question 2

(UFSC) Mark the only sentence where the nominal agreement appears inappropriately.

a) It forced its corpulence to exercise and forced evolution.
b) It forced its corpulence to forced exercise and evolution.
c) It forced its corpulence to forced exercise and evolution.
d) It forced its corpulence to forced exercise and evolution.
e) His corpulence forced evolution and exercise.

Alternative c: Compelled your corpulence to forced exercise and evolution.

In this case, there are basically two rules:

1. when the adnominal adjunct (forced) comes before the nouns (exercise, evolution) it must agree with the closest noun. Therefore, it is correct to say "forced exercise and evolution" (d) and "forced evolution and exercise" (e).

2. when the adnominal adjunct (forced) comes after the nouns (exercise, evolution) it can agree with the closest noun or with all of them. Therefore, it is correct to say "forced exercise and evolution" (a) and "forced exercise and evolution" (b).

question 3

(PUC-Campinas) The sentence in which the nominal agreement is INCORRECT is:

a) The tools I deem necessary for you to repair the engine, they are in this box; I leave attached, for your own control, a list of them.
b) The efforts you've made to help us are really commendable, so whatever the results, we really appreciate it.
c) Political-economic issues involve wide debate, so do not consider any uncertainties regarding these points unacceptable.
d) Many recent researches have overcome some statements about the Portuguese language and literature.
e) After about two weeks, the results of the contest that awarded the most outstanding artist of the carnival and other carioca festivities were known.

Alternative b: The efforts you've made to help us are really commendable, so whatever the results, we really appreciate it.

Correction: They are really commendable the efforts you've made to help us, so whatever the results, we're very grateful.

Explanation: The word "commendable" works as an adnominal adjunct to the noun "efforts", so you must agree with it.

In letter a) "necessary" agrees with "tools".
In letter c) "unacceptable" agrees with "indefinitions".
In letter d) "surpassed" agrees with "affirmations".
In letter e) "known" agrees with "results".

question 4

(FCC-BA) "Water at meals is ________ for health. This is one of the many precautions that ________ must take if you want to maintain your figure."

a) bad, it is necessary
b) bad, they are accurate
c) bad it is necessary
d) bad, are accurate
e) bad, it is necessary

Alternative b: bad, they are accurate.

Correction: "Water at meals is bad for your health. That's one of the many precautions you need to take if you want to maintain your figure."

"Bad" does not vary when it agrees with a noun that is not preceded by any determinants*. Thus, it is correct to say "water is good", but if there were a determinant before, we would have: "water is good".

The same happens with the expression "it is necessary", for example: Precaution is necessary. But if we use a determinant first, the correct thing is: Many precautions are needed.

*Determinants can be articles, pronouns and adjective numerals.

question 5

(Cesgranrio) “Heavy nights of smells and heats piled up…”

Point out the option where, after replacing the nouns highlighted above, the agreement of “heap” is incorrect.

a) crowded smells and breezes
b) heaped breezes and odors
c) piled up clouds and breezes
d) piled up clouds and hills
e) hills and clouds piled up

Alternative b: huddled breezes and odors.

When a word serves as an adnominal adjunct (heap) for two nouns (odors and breezes) and comes after them, it must agree with the nearest noun or with all.

So, it is correct:

a) huddled smells and breezes - because "huddled" agrees with "breeze", which is the closest noun.
c) huddled clouds and breezes - because "huddled" agrees with "breeze", which is the closest noun and also agrees with all nouns (clouds and breezes).
d) heaps of clouds and hills - because "heaps" agrees with "heaps", which is the closest noun.
e) heaps of hills and clouds - because "heaps" agrees with all nouns (hills and clouds).

question 6

(FAMECA) Note the agreement:

1) Entry prohibited.
2) Entry is prohibited.
3) Entry is prohibited.
4) Entry is prohibited.
5) For whom is entry prohibited?

a) Number 5 is wrong.
b) 4 and 5 are wrong.
c) A 2 is wrong.
d) All are right.
e) 2 and 5 are wrong.

Alternative to: Number 5 is wrong.

Fix: Who the entry is for prohibited?

As a general rule, the expression "is prohibited" does not vary.

If, however, we are not talking in a generic sense and the expression is accompanied by a determinant (article, pronoun or numeral) that specifies it, then there must be agreement with the determinant. This is what happens in this case, where the word "entry" is preceded by the article "a".

Let's look at the other phrases:

1) Entry prohibited. (The expression "it is forbidden" is not present. In this case, the adjective "forbidden" must agree with the noun "entrance")
2) Entry is prohibited. (Here we have the expression in a generic sense, "it is prohibited", so there are no variations)
3) Entry is prohibited. (In this case, the noun "entry" is accompanied by a feminine article, which is why the adjective must agree and also go to feminine)
4) Entry is prohibited. (The same as in number 2, that is, the presence of the expression in a generic sense, "it is prohibited" does not allow variation)

question 7

(Cesgranrio) In view of the rules of nominal agreement, check the option where the gap can only be filled by one of the terms placed in parentheses:

a) hair and pupil _____ (black / black)
b) head and body _____ (monstrous / monstrous)
c) calm and serenity _____ (enviable / enviable)
d) teeth and claws _____ (sharp / sharp)
e) branches and trunk _____ (dry / dry)

Alternative to: hair and pupil _____ (black / black).

Under the one adjunct rule for two nouns, "black hair and pupil" is the only correct option.

The word "negras" could not be used because it does not agree with the closest noun (pupil is singular) and also does not agree with all nouns (hair is a noun masculine).

As for the remaining alternatives:

b) head and body _____ (monstrous / monstrous) - "monstrous" agrees with "body" (closest noun) and "monstrous" agrees with head and body.
c) calm and serenity _____ (enviable/enviable) - "enviable" agrees with "serenity" (closest noun) and "enviable" agrees with "calm and serenity".
d) teeth and claws _____ (sharp/sharp) - "sharp" agrees with "teeth and claws" and "sharp" agrees with "claws" (closest noun).
e) branches and trunk _____ (dry / dry) "dry" agrees with "trunk" (closest noun) and "dry" agrees with "branch and trunk".

question 8

III - For registration, the requested documentation is _____.

a) attached - fresh - required
b) attached - fresh - required
c) attachments - fresh - necessary
d) attached - fresh - required
e) attached - fresh - required

Alternative B: attached - fresh - required.

  • The word "attachment" must agree with the noun to which it refers: "attached poems The letters".
  • The word "fresh" must agree with the closest noun: "fresh squid". It would also be correct if you agreed on all nouns: "fresh octopus and squid".
  • The word "required" must agree with the noun "documentation" because it is preceded by an article (The documentation). If this were not the case, the expression "it is necessary" does not vary. For example: Listening is required.

question 9

(FGV-SP) Check the alternative where there is an error of agreement.

a) Between one glass of beer and another, it was considered, for some time, the possibility of breaking out a revolution.
b) Most students arrived at 1 pm.
c) The reasons that led Chico Leitão to these diatribes are unknown.
d) The entry of oxen into the corrals hindered the counting.
e) The helpers arrived from Brasília to clean the office.

Alternative a: Between one glass of beer and another, it was considered, for some time, the possibility of breaking out a revolution.

Fix: Between one glass of beer and another, it was considered, for some time, the possibility of breaking out a revolution.

The word "considered" must agree with the word "possibility", ie "the possibility was considered".

How many of the remaining alternatives:

b) It would also be correct "Most of the students arrived at 1 pm", since in partitive collectives the verb can be used in the singular or in the plural.
c) "You know" agrees with "reasons".
d) "Disturbed" agrees with "input".

c) Those same figures seemed a bit strange to us.
d) The president wants the decree as brief and incisive as possible.

Alternative b: The souls, voices and laughter of men were forever silent.

Correction: They were dumbstruck, forever, the souls, voices and laughter of men.
The adjective "mute" must agree with the closest noun, in this case, "souls", since it comes from other nouns it also refers to (voices and laughter).

It would also be correct:

The souls, voices and laughter of men were dumbfounded forever.
The souls, laughter and voices of men were dumbstruck forever.

question 11

(ITA) Check the option that correctly completes the gaps in the following text:

b) a lot - in - a lot - with the - nas - in
c) enough - for - socks - to - a - to
d) socks - for - a lot - by - in - by
e) well - by - through - to - by - in the

Alternative to: middle - to - quite - to with - to - to a.

  • middle: in this case, it acts as an adverb, which is why it remains unchanged.
  • to: preposition that establishes relationship of purpose (to read newspapers)
  • enough: it's an adverb, so it doesn't vary.
  • to with: has the sense of "with respect to".

d) Only I studied the elementary, which leaves me quite apprehensive.
e) I spent a lot of winter only.

Alternative d: I only studied the elementary, which makes me a little apprehensive.

  • "Only" in this case is an adverb (could be replaced by "only"), so it doesn't vary.
  • "Medium" in this case is also an adverb and does not vary.

In the plural, the phrase would be: We only study the elementary, which makes us a little apprehensive.

As for the other alternatives:

a) These are the means more exact for you to solve the problem: study only. ("middle", in this case, is noun, so it varies)
B) Socks word, means tones – index of your wisdom. ("half/o", in this case, are adjectives, so they vary)
c) were SOS on that occasion; I believed, because in your socks promises. ("alone" - the same as "alone" - and "half", in this case, are adjectives, so they vary)

c) makes an ideological agreement, in a case of number silepsis.
d) could be replaced by the term "combined".
e) agrees with all the terms to which it refers, prevailing the masculine plural.

Alternative e: agrees with all the terms to which it refers, prevailing the masculine plural.

This is the rule when an adjective refers to more than one noun and comes after them. It would also be correct if the adjective agreed with the closest noun (poverty). In this case, we would have the following prayer:

“Illiteracy, basic sanitation and poverty combined explain 62% of the mortality rate of children up to five years old in Brazil'

question 14

d) I have any less information you about the search result. (There is no "menas". "Less" is a word that never varies)
and is required the participation of students in school events. (When the expression "is necessary" is accompanied by an article, it varies. e) I use old glass and dishes.

Alternative e: I use old glass and crockery.

Adjectives that act as an adjunct to two nouns and that come after them must agree with the closest noun (cup) or with all of them (crockery and cups).

Thus, there was agreement with the closest noun in:

The adjective "quite" must agree with the subjects to which it refers.

As for the remaining alternatives:

a) We did not find either councilor or mayor re-elected in the city. (When we use the expression "neither" the agreement can also be done in the singular. Therefore, it would also be correct: "We did not find in the city neither a councilor nor a re-elected mayor."
c) Teachers, academics, employees: no one commented on the loss of pay at the union meeting. ("commented" agrees with "nobody", which is a recapitulative bet)

question 25

(UFJF) Text for the next question:

The fragment of text below, by André Machado, was adapted from the section Informática etc., of the newspaper O Globo, of June 30, 2003, p. 2.

Text

Life Before and After the Computer and the Internet

Teacher uses blog2 to inform about disabilities.

Using a computer can actually add a new dimension to the day of a disabled person. Teacher Marcela Cálamo Vaz Silva, 36, resident of Guarulhos, SP, has been a quadriplegic since she was six years old and says that technology has changed her life. She also cites Motrix and Dosvox as examples of software that helps the disabled, although her case doesn't require them:

- I've never used any specific software for people with disabilities, because even with an injury at a very tall, which classifies me as a quadriplegic, I have preserved the movements of my arms, hands and fingers - he explains, by email. But I can safely say that my life is divided into two phases: before and after the computer, especially the Internet. My contact with the network started four years ago, through chats3. The chat phase lasted about two and a half years and it was at the end of it that I discovered how much my world could grow through the Internet. Even though I was a paraplegic since I was six years old, my contact with other people with disabilities was limited to the few years I attended the AACD (Association for the Support of Disabled Children). It was through the Internet that I got in touch with people with special needs, like me, and started to get interested in issues related to disability, such as the fight for rights, prejudice, accessibility.

It was also through a chat friend that Marcela had her first contact with the blogging world (in July, Maré's blog will be one year old). Today, she is a committed blogger.

- In the beginning it was just a blog with unpretentious subjects. But, later, I realized that I was directing it to inform my readers, most of them made up of people without any kind of disability, especially that my experience as a "chair user" allowed. I realized how poorly informed people are about how a person with a disability lives and that this ignorance is due to the lack of coexistence or someone who can tell them how things really they are. I decided that I would do this on my blog.

In the fragment "(...) I have PRESERVED the movements of arms, hands and fingers (...)." (2nd paragraph), the adjustment of flexions in "preserved" is explained by a process of:

a) nominal agreement with “arms”.
b) verbal agreement with “movements”.
c) nominal agreement with “movements”.
d) verbal agreement with “arms, hands and fingers”.
e) nominal agreement with “fingers”.

Alternative c: nominal agreement with “moves”.

It becomes clearer to see that "preserved" agrees with "movements" when the order is changed: "I have the movements preserved".

question 26

a) I loved Chinese and Japanese food.
b) The United States is a great nation.
c) We really like the Brazilian and African parties.
d) These days he was a little sad.
e) Fewer teachers are collaborating on the cause.

Alternative b: The United States is a great nation.

The definite article “the” must agree with the plural of the later terms “states” and “united”. So, the correct thing would be: The United States. In addition, the verb must also be in the plural: “are”.

So the correct phrase would be: The United States is a great nation.

question 27

I. More and less teenagers are getting pregnant early.
II. He asked for half a glass of milk to drink.
III. The sign warned of prohibited entry.

The alternative that contains the correct agreement(s):

there
b) II

e) The internet account was attached to the email.

Alternative b: It is forbidden to swim at this location.

The expression "is prohibited" does not vary, however, if it is accompanied by a determinant that modifies it, it can vary, for example: the entry of strangers is prohibited (in this case, the determinant is the definite article "The").

The correction of the other alternatives is:

a) We have a lot of patience with them.
c) It takes a lot of faith to face the problems.
d) From an artistic point of view, they are really beautiful pictures.
e) The internet account was attached to the email.

b) The word “socks” is incorrect as this term does not have a plural form.
c) Both terms used have no plural form.
d) The term “medium” has the function of an adverb and means: more or less.
e) Verdades is a feminine adjective that does not agree with the noun “socks”.

Alternative d: The term "medium" has the function of an adverb and means: more or less

When the term “middle” means “more or less” it is an adverb of intensity. Otherwise, if it means “half”, it is a numeral.

question 30

"The pantry is full. We have enough food to spend the weekend."

According to the rules of nominal agreement, is the highlighted term correct or incorrect? Justify your answer.

Fix: Pantry is full. We have plenty of food for the weekend.

In the case above, the term "a lot" does not vary, as it has the function of an adverb. The highlighted term can only vary when it has the function of an adjective. And in that case, it must agree in gender and number with the noun that accompanies it.
