THE regressive derivation it is a type of derivation that occurs through the suppression of the primitive word, generating a derivative.
Example:
He is one portuguese very cool. (Portuguese = Portuguese)
Derived words are created from primitive words, for example: flower (primitive) and florist (derived).
Remember that derivation is a word formation process that occurs with the word stem and its affixes (suffix and prefix).
In addition to the regressive derivation we have: improper derivation, suffixal, prefixal and parasynthetic.
Regressive Derivation Examples
- O mengo blew it this afternoon. (Flamengo)
- Every day they go to that bar (bar)
- Maria Eugenia is very commune. (communist)
- Tonight will be a agitation. (from the verb shake)
- Nora offered help for students. (from the verb help)
- they were in a big make out (from the verb knead)
- O kiss it is a form of greeting between people. (from the verb kiss)
- O cry of the child was very hopeless. (from the verb cry)
- O debate it was about the privatization of companies (from the verb to debate)
- we had a great loss this afternoon. (from the verb to lose)
Note: Note that in the regressive derivation a new word (usually noun) is formed from a verb. For this reason, these nouns are called deverbals.
In the examples above, we have the suppression of –r end of verbs, which indicates the infinitive ending.
