Difference between Class and Function

Maybe these two little words, class and occupation, seem to you something quite strange. However, after you get to know them better, you will realize that this is a very simple subject, of which we already have, even a little bit of knowledge.

Do you remember the grammar classes? Well, if you don't remember, access the text "Grammatical classes”.

And the subject and predicate: don't you remember too? Don't worry, go to the text “Prayer: subject and predicate”, who will also remember.

After you have recalled some details, considered important, let's get to what really matters: what is a class and what is a function?

In a sentence, a word can belong to a certain class, as well as it can have a different function, depending on the position in which it finds itself. So that everything is clear for you, take a look at the following example:

The girl is studious.

Let's analyze the class and function of each word in it:

A – article;
girl - noun
It is – verb to be;
Scholar - adjective

There we have the class, because it refers to those grammatical classes that we are already aware of.

Now, let's look at the function:

the girl - guy
She is studious – nominal predicate, of which we also already have knowledge.
Scholar - predicative of the subject

As you can see, the class is represented by the grammatical classes; and the function is represented by the subject, predicate, among other elements.
