Do you like to read? If your answer is yes, you should know that our Brazilian Literature is very rich, with its writers who represent our lyrics here and in the rest of the world as well. If you are also passionate about reading, you will certainly enjoy knowing the differences between poetry, poems and sonnets. Come on?
Many people confuse the poem with poetry, just as they don't know the characteristics of a sonnet. Understanding the differences is important even so that you can better appreciate the art of words. Watch:
♥Poetry: it is a broader concept than the poem and the sonnet. Many people think that poetry is a textual genre, but in fact it is not necessarily related to the written word. A beautiful painting, for example, can be full of poetry, as well as a sculpture, a film, music and even a beautiful landscape, such as sunrise or sunset. Therefore, poetry is a broader definition and encompasses various artistic manifestations and forms of expression.

♥ Poem: it is a textual genre which uses words as raw material, organizing them in verse, stanzas or prose, that is, it presents a structure that allows defining it as a genre. The word poem is derived from the Greek verb poein, which means “make, create, compose”. In Brazil there are many and many poets, among them the poet Mario Quintana, whose poem below is a beautiful example of this enchanting genre!
song of the usual day
So good to live day to day...
Life like this, never tires...
live just for moments
Like these clouds in the sky...
And just win, all your life,
Inexperience... hope...
And the crazy wind rose
Attached to the crown of the hat.
Never give a river a name:
It's always another river to pass.
Nothing ever goes on,
Everything will start over!
and without any memory
Of the other lost times,
I throw the dream rose
In your distracted hands...
Mario Quintana
♥ Sonnet: O sonnet is a type of poem that has a fixed form, that is, it is always presented with the same structure: four stanzas, two quartets (four verses each stanza) and two triplets (three verses each stanza). Writing a sonnet is a task for great poets, even because, in addition to the fixed form, it takes a lot of talent to build all verses with ten poetic syllables, the so-called decasyllable verses. Read below the beautiful sonnet of one of our greatest Brazilian sonnetists, the poet Vinicius de Moraes:
Total Love Sonnet
I love you so much my love… don't sing
The human heart with more truth...
I love you as a friend and as a lover
in an ever-diverse reality
I love you in love, with a calm and helpful love,
And I love you beyond, present in the nostalgia.
I love you, finally, with great freedom
Within eternity and every moment.
I just love you like an animal,
Of a love without mystery and without virtue
With a massive and permanent desire.
And to love you so much and often,
It's just that one day in your body suddenly
I will die to love more than I could.
Vinicius de Moraes
