Classification of words by number of syllables

To cword classification regarding the number of syllables is the name the word receives because of the number of syllables it has. Words can be:

• monosyllables;

• disyllables;

• trisyllables;

• polysyllables.

Read this word slowly: I do. You will notice that it has two pieces:

I do

Now read the word window. You'll notice that it has three little pieces:

window

Each of these pieces is named after a syllable, which is the sound we utter at once when speaking the word.

Words can have one syllable, two, three, four or even more than four syllables, with a name for each of these classifications.

  • Monosyllables: they are words that have only one syllable.

Examples: my tea, hi, already,

  • Dissyllables: are words that have two syllables.

Examples:

→ home: home

→ coffee: coffee

→ hello: hello

  • Trisyllables: are words that have three syllables.

Examples:

→ shame: see-go-nha

→ alligator: alligator

→ cute: cute

  • Polysyllables: are words that have four or more syllables.

Examples:

→ anonymous: a-nô-ni-mo

→ apartment: a-par-ta-men-to

→ kids: girl

Thus, we observe that word classifications will be according to the number of syllables.
