Pollution: types, causes, consequences, examples

The word “pollution” refers to the contamination and/or degradation of the environment; harming life. In general, it is caused by us human beings, but its consequences affect not only people, but all life on Earth, as is the case with global warming and the greenhouse effect.

Very frequent types of pollution and harmful to the entire planet are:

  • noise pollution
  • thermal pollution
  • air pollution
  • ground pollution
  • water pollution

Types of pollution

As pollution is, unfortunately, quite common, it can be classified into different types to facilitate understanding of how it is caused and what it can cause in the environment.

Pollution causes several environmental problems in the most diverse ecosystems.
  • Noise pollution

É caused by sounds and noises which, alone or together, become very high, some examples are:

  • Car noises and their horns,

  • conversations,

  • barks,

  • machine sounds,

  • Loud music,

  • noise from TV and appliances.

Noise pollution can cause irritation, fatigue, stress

and even deafness. To avoid this last problem, some professionals, such as musicians and masons who work with jackhammers, should use ear protectors. If you want to know more details about this type of pollution, visit our text: noise pollution.

  • thermal pollution

Occurs when the temperature of the air or water increases a lot. In the case of water, this thermal pollution often occurs due to its use for cooling parts of large industries, which is then returned to its place of origin. Thus, it returns with the highest temperature, which can cause the death of animals and other living beings that live there.

  • Air pollution

Orun by increase in polluting gases in atmosphere. This fact impairs air quality and can cause respiratory diseases in many people. Also, depending on the gas in question, many other problems can occur, such as temperature rise, acid rain, etc.

Some major culprits for air pollution are:

  • vehicle exhaust,

  • industries,

  • forest fires

  • incineration of household waste.

  • Ground pollution

Occurs mainly by accumulation of pesticides and garbage, such as packaging, food, plastic, etc. This type of pollution compromises the lives of living beings that inhabit there, and is capable of contaminating the groundwater (water that accumulates below the ground).

To avoid this problem, we must avoid using unnecessary packaging, throwing away as few things as possible, always seeking to reuse them and also having what was damaged repaired.

  • Water pollution

THE main cause of Water pollution it's the discharge of garbage and sewage into rivers, seas and lakes. Sewage, as it contains several impurities, can transmit infectious and contagious diseases; cause intoxication and even death of the living beings that live there, etc. As for garbage, the excess of bags, PET bottles and other plastic products, for example, has caused pollution in several regions of the Ocean with that stuff.
