We know that the sun is essential for the survival of living beings on the planet, since its light is used to carry out photosynthesis, which guarantees the survival of plants and algae that constitute the base of the food chain. Furthermore, in our body, sunlight is important for the manufacture of vitamin D, which ensures the proper development of our bones. Still, exaggerated exposure to the sun has some harmful effects, so a lot of caution is needed.
Among the main harmful effects of the sun are the burns of skin. This problem starts with the increase in redness in the area exposed to UV radiation emitted by the Sun. In the affected area of the body, it is common to feel pain, which increases with the intensity of the burn. In more severe cases, blisters appear, which should not be popped under any circumstances.
When we are exposed to the Sun, we can also suffer from dehydration problems. On hot days, we lose a lot of water through sweating, which is to prevent an exaggerated increase in body temperature.
The radiation emitted by the Sun can also trigger eye problems such as blindness and cataracts. These two problems are serious and are triggered by inadequate exposure to the sun over the years.
Another very common problem triggered by UV radiation is skin aging, which causes wrinkles to appear prematurely. This is because radiation causes problems in the production of two products: collagen and elastin, which give the skin elasticity.
In addition to all these problems, there is also the increased risk of skin cancer. Some of the symptoms of this type of cancer are the appearance of spots and wounds on the skin and changes in existing ones, such as increased size and bleeding. It is worth noting that the appearance of cancer is usually related to the way the body was exposed to the sun during life, that is, it has a cumulative effect.
However, by following some basic measures, all the problems mentioned above can be avoided. Here are some tips:
The use of sunscreen is one of the main ways to prevent the harmful effects of the sun.
→ Avoid sun exposure after 10 am and before 4 pm;
→ Use sunscreen whenever you expose yourself to the sun, even if the day is cloudy or rainy;
→ Choose a protector according to your skin type. The best professional to provide this information is the dermatologist;
→ Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going out in the sun and reapply every two hours and whenever you get out of the water;
→ Whenever possible, use hats, caps and umbrellas to protect yourself from the sun;
→ Always try to wear sunglasses to protect your eyes;
→ When exposed to the sun for a long time, remember to drink plenty of fluids and eat light foods.
