Meaning of Shekinah (What It Is, Concept and Definition)

Shekinah is Hebrew word which means "housing" or "presence of God". For theologians, the translation that comes closest to this word is “the glory of God manifests.

The word shekinah has several spellings, including shekinah, shechina and shekina. According to the Hebrew-Portuguese dictionary, the Hebrew verb “shachan” translates to dwell or dwell, as well as the word “shikan” translates to lodge or install. The two words have the same root as the word shekinah, which means "Divine Presence" or "in whom Jehovah dwells."

Shekinah is a word that appears frequently in the Hebrew Bible, indicating the presence of God. Many Christians also consider that the word Shekinah is also referenced in the New Testament, in several texts, with symbolic representation of the divine presence dwelling among the people.

Shekinah is often represented by the cloud, as you can see in the passage Exodus 40:35: “Moses he could not enter the tent of meeting, because the cloud had settled over him and the glory of Yahweh filled the sanctuary". It is often represented by the “Divine Glory that inhabited the earth” as in Psalm 85: 8,9: “I will listen to what Yahweh says: God proclaims peace to his people and his faithful, and to those who turn from heart. Salvation is at hand to those who fear him, and glory will dwell in our land.”
