UEFA is the governing body of European football. UEFA is the English acronym for Union of European Football Associations which in Portuguese means Union of European Football Federations.
UEFA manages three major club football competitions for men: Champions League (UEFA Champions League), Europa League (UEFA European League) and European Super Cup. It also manages women's football tournaments, U17, U19, U21 and Futsal. The Champions League is UEFA's most important competition, involving major European clubs and some of the best players in the world. UEFA is also responsible for managing the European Football Championship which takes place every 4 years (in even years where there is no World Cup).
UEFA was founded on 15 June 1954 in Basel, Switzerland and as of 2011 has 53 member associations. Its administrative headquarters are located in Nyon, Switzerland and its current president (since 2007) the Frenchman Michel Platini, was considered one of the best football players in the world, in the decade of 1980.
