The preparation of a summary requires analysis and interpretation of the content so that the most important ideas are conveyed. A summary can be indicative, informative or critical (with critical opinions of the author).

Writing a text in a few lines helps the student to develop his ability to synthesise, objectivity and clarity: three factors that will be very important throughout school life. Besides being a great tool for studying the subject to take a test.
In Brazil, the norms in force for the abstracts included in scientific and academic works are authored by the ABNT (Brazilian Association of Technical Norms).
Abstract is synonymous with "recapitulation", when, at the end of each chapter of a book, a brief text is presented with the key ideas of the introduced subject. Other synonyms for summary are: synopsis, summary, synthesis, epitome, and compendium.
The summary of the chapters of a novel is a resource widely used by television channels, magazines or specific websites for the daily presentation of a sequence of the main events in a given chapter.
Summary and Review
A review is a text where there is a critical opinion of the person who writes in relation to the book or document on which the review was written. Although it conveys the writer's opinion, using the first person in a review is not recommended. It is important to note that in the case of the descriptive review, the author's opinion may not be present.
On the other hand, the summary does not contain the opinion (unless it is a critical summary), and it is just a summary of the main ideas of the book or document.
How to make a summary
The first step in making a summary is to careful reading of the text that will be summarized. Then, in the different paragraphs, the key concepts, that is, the most important ideas. Then the abstract, where the paragraphs are concisely described, never forgetting to address the most important concepts. As a conclusion, a careful reading of the abstract should be made, to prove that the main ideas of the original text are included in the summary.
