Meaning of Cyst (What it is, Concept and Definition)

Cyst it is a benign tumor, a closed sac with liquid, semi-solid or pasty content, formed from epithelial tissue or embryonic epithelial debris.

It is slow growing and usually has no symptoms. The word "cyst" comes from the Greek kystis, which means bag, cyst, bladder.

A cyst can form in any tissue in the body, although it usually appears in the skin, as a result of an infection, obstruction of the sebaceous glands or around foreign bodies.

It can also develop as a result of developmental abnormalities such as the pilonidal cyst, for example.

Ovarian cyst

The cyst can form inside, over or outside the ovary and usually only appears on one of the ovaries. It appears when there is some hormonal imbalance, being more common in women among 20 and 35 years, carriers of endometriosis or with pelvic inflammatory disease.

In the presence of ovarian cysts it is quite common and rarely interferes with ovulation. THE surgery is only indicated if the cyst has more than 10 cm, with solid and liquid areas.

Types of Ovarian Cysts

  • Follicular Cyst: It forms when ovulation does not happen or when the mature follicle regresses;
  • Corpus Luteum Cyst: It is formed after the egg is released from the ovarian follicle and the follicle becomes a structure called the corpus luteum;
  • Hemorrhagic Cyst: It appears when there is bleeding from the cyst wall into the cyst;
  • Dermoid Cyst: Benign tumor that may contain fat, bones, teeth, hair and cartilage inside;
  • Endometrioid Cyst: Formed when tissue covering the inner surface of the uterus (endometrium) grows in the ovaries;
  • Polycystic Ovary: The ovary is usually twice its normal size and has small cysts on its outer surface. They arise in situations where chronic menstrual delays occur;
  • Cystadenoma: A benign tumor that develops in ovarian tissue, can reach several centimeters in diameter and require surgery.
