Meaning of Medusa (What It Is, Concept and Definition)

Jellyfish was a terrible creature of petrifying eyes and hair formed by snakes, which is part of the Greek mythology.

Legend has it that Medusa, daughter of Forces and Ceto (marine deities), was a beautiful woman with golden wings but, was punished by Athena (goddess of wisdom) for having made love to Poseidon (god of the sea) in a Temple of Athena.

The goddess of wisdom turned Medusa into a terrible creature, with scaly skin and snake-like hair. She became mortal and her eyes turned into a stone statue all those who stared at her.

Medusa and her sisters Stenus and Euriale were called the Gorgon sisters, they were feared and lived in a cave in the far east of Greece, surrounded by petrified men and animals.

The hero Perseus, son of Zeus (god of gods) was tasked with killing Medusa. Athena helped by giving him her shield and Hermes (messenger of the gods) gave her his winged sandals and a link that would make him invisible. King Polidectes ordered the young Perseus to cut off Medusa's head and gave him a saddlebag to transport her.

Legend has it that Perseus killed Medusa and gave the head to Athena, who placed it on her shield as a symbol of victory.

In figurative meaning, jellyfish can also be the designation of an ugly woman.
