Cholera is an infectious and epidemic disease of Asian origin caused by the bacteria Vibrio Cholerae. It is more common in parts of the planet where sanitation conditions are precarious, such as some places in South America, Africa, India and some Asian countries. The vibrio of cholera (a microorganism that is the causative agent of this disease) was discovered in 1883 by the German bacteriologist and physician Robert Koch.
Cholera is a serious infection that occurs in the intestines, which presents as symptoms intense vomiting, profuse and constant diarrhea, and general malaise. Usually a person suffering from cholera is quickly weakened by dehydration. A person suffering from cholera can lose up to 20 liters of water a day.
When there is no proper treatment, about 50% of people die quickly, victims of toxins in the blood and cardiac arrest.
Like treatment, the individual must replace the fluids, and serum is often administered. The intake of fresh water may not be enough, because in this case there is no replacement of glucose, sodium and potassium. The administration of the antibiotics doxycycline and tetracycline is also common.
Concerning prevention, there is a vaccine against cholera, which is given through a subcutaneous injection. However, this vaccine does not offer complete protection, so some preventive measures must be taken. One of the best ways to prevent this disease is improve basic sanitation and educate the community to have good personal hygiene habits. To avoid contamination, a person must take care to always drink clean water, wash food thoroughly before eating, and cook food properly.
