Occidental can be an adjective or a noun of two genders in the Portuguese language, used to define something situated in the West or people who are from the countries of the West (western peoples).
The western side is the western region of the Earth's pole. It is considered one of the sun's orientation points, represented by the side of the horizon where the sun sets at the end of the day.
The star that sets after the Sun is also called western.
Within the branch of jewelry, an emerald or pearl of lesser value is called western, as opposed to "oriental stone"which qualifies as a "Gem of the First Water".

O western world, also known as Western civilization or simply Western, had its concept formed in Europe, even during the existence of the Greco-Roman civilization.
The western world, as it is known nowadays, is basically made up of countries with connections with European culture, through the colonization process they suffered by the countries that make up this continent.
In general, Western civilization, from political to cultural aspects, is formed by the nations of the European Union, North and Latin America, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, principally.
During the Cold War, the Manichean concept of the Western and Eastern world was well defined, with the constitution of the Soviet bloc in the mid-20th century.

The concept of Western Culture - or European culture, as it is also known - is a set of social norms, traditions, beliefs, political systems and other cultural, social and technological legacies that originated directly or indirectly in the Europe.
In other words, Western culture is present in all countries that were influenced, through colonization, for example, from countries on the European continent.
Several civilizations were formed on the basis of Western culture. Example: Celtic, Germanic, Hellenic, Latin and so on.

Western and Eastern definitions of the divisions created during the crisis of the Roman Empire, when in 286, to avoid constant conflicts, Emperor Diocletian reorganized the structure of power. The empire was divided into two parts: the East under his command and the West, entrusted to Maximian.
Until the end of the fourth century, the Roman Empire remained unified. In 395, Emperor Theodosius divided the Roman Empire into two parts: Western Roman Empire, with capital in Milan, and the Eastern Roman Empire with its capital in Constantinople, which became an Empire Byzantine.
