Betrayal is a feminine noun that refers to the act of betraying and means a lack of loyalty, breach of loyalty and trust.
Betrayal has the same origin as the word tradition, the Latin term traditione. As for etymology, this word is connoted with the delivery of something that can harm another.
The concept of betrayal implies that there is trust (or some other kind of relationship) between the elements involved. Thus, betrayal can happen between friends or between people who have a loving relationship.
The betrayal can be male or female, in the case of infidelity in love, which happens in the case of marriage or dating. In the realm of relationships, betrayal is a very delicate topic, which causes suffering, anger and anguish in the person who has been betrayed. This person must decide if they can forgive the betrayer and if so, they must think about whether they want to continue a relationship with that person, even after the breach of trust.
Some of the most famous betrayals in history were:
- Judas betrayed his master Jesus, handing him over to the Jewish authorities. This betrayal is also famous because Judas identified Jesus through a kiss;
- In 1789, Joaquim Silvério dos Reis betrayed the separatist Tiradentes, causing his death by hanging;
- Brutus' betrayal of Emperor Caesar, who was stabbed during a Senate meeting.
