Assumption of Our Lady

The Assumption of Our Lady or Assumption of Mary is a doctrine taught in the Catholic Church and in some Orthodox Churches. According to this doctrine, when Jesus' mother died, she was resurrected. Thus, it was not only his soul that ascended to heaven, but also his body.

This doctrine began in the sixth century, in the East, more specifically in the Byzantine Empire. However, this dogma of faith only had its solemn proclamation in 1950, through Pope Pius XII.

The Assumption of Our Lady is a municipal holiday in some municipalities such as Belo Horizonte and Fortaleza, being celebrated on August 15th.
