Gender can be defined as what identifies and differentiates men and women, that is, the male and the female gender.

According to the “traditional” definition of gender, it can be used as a synonym for “sex”, referring to what is proper to male as well as female.

However, from the point of view of social sciences and psychology, mainly, the gender is understood as what differentiates people socially., taking into account the historical and cultural patterns attributed to men and women.

As it is a social role, gender can be constructed and deconstructed, that is, it can be understood as something changeable and not limited, as defined by the biological sciences.

In biological studies, the concept of gender is a term used in scientific classification and grouping of living organisms, which form a set of species with morphological and functional characteristics, reflecting the existence of common and close ancestors.

For example, the “homo sapiens” is the name of the human species which belongs to the genus “homo”.

consists of the how a given individual identifies himself in society, based on the social role of gender and the individual's sense of identity.

The concept of gender identity is not related to biological factors, but rather to the identification of the individual with a certain gender (male, female or both).

For example, a person who was biologically born with a male sex, but who identifies with the social role of the female gender, becomes socially recognized as a woman. This person is called transgender, as they have a different gender identity from the biological one.

It is incorrect, however, to relate gender identity with sexual orientation. There are transsexual people, for example, who can be heterosexual, homosexual or bisexual, just like cisgender people.
