O Triple Alliance Treaty it was an agreement signed secretly between Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. Signed in May 1865, the aforementioned countries joined together to fight the then dictator of Paraguay Solano López in Paraguay War.
The conflict was considered one of the most lasting and violent to ever occur in the Latin America.
Summary of the Triple Alliance Treaty
The Triple Alliance Treaty contains 19 articles that propose, among other things, the union of the three countries involved: Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay.
O main objective The agreement was to defeat Paraguay, removing the government of Francisco Solano López.
Solano López's main intention was to conquer neighboring territories so that the country could obtain an outlet to the sea. The treaty was necessary because Paraguay had an army better prepared than its opponents.

“His Majesty the Emperor of Brazil, the Argentine Republic and the Oriental Republic of Uruguay unite in an offensive and defensive alliance in the war promoted by the Paraguayan Government”.
Paraguay had about 60,000 men, in addition to ships, artillery and squadrons. Brazil, on the other hand, managed to summon approximately 12,000 soldiers, Argentina 8,000 and Uruguay, 3,000. It can be seen that the sum of the three countries did not come close to the number of Paraguayan fighters.
A point raised by the Triple Alliance countries was that they were not fighting against the Paraguayan people, but against their government.
The Paraguay War was an expensive conflict, which compromised a large part of public coffers. England entered the conflict on the side of the signatory countries, which generated more expenses. The British lent money to the Triple Alliance countries, increasing their debt.
After Paraguay's defeat, the country was in a critical state, which led to epidemics and famine. The majority of the male population was decimated. The country's economy has entered a deep crisis.
Paraguay is currently a country with a low level of development.
