Science lesson plan on how plants grow

Subject matter: Sciences

Series: 5th year

Lesson Objective: Understand and argue through this class plan that plants get what they need from the air and the Water. Support an argument that plants get the materials they need for growth, primarily from air and water.

Introduction

Tell students: What do plants need to grow? (Allow students to respond.)

Development

To say:

There are many different types of plants and each different type of plant has different needs. However, all plants need water and sun to grow.

Why do plants need water and sun? (Allow students to respond.)

Plants need water and sun because they produce their own food, which is called photosynthesis.

The leaves of a plant have parts called chloroplasts. Chloroplasts have a green pigment, which is called chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is what makes the leaves of a plant green.

Chloroplasts absorb carbon dioxide from the air. Carbon dioxide mixes with the sun's stored energy in chloroplasts and creates a simple sugar through a chemical reaction.

The simple sugar that is created is then transported through the plant and used by the plant as energy.

Water is also needed and used in the photosynthesis process. Without water, photosynthesis would not be able to happen.

So what are the two things plants need to grow? (Allow students to respond.)

Plants need air and water.

Activity

Students must pretend that someone is trying to convince them that the only thing plants need is to be planted in the ground.

Tell them to think about what they would say to them and how you would try to convince them that the main things plants need are water and air.

The student must write a response to that person.

Finally, ask if anyone has any questions.

Comments

Say: Who would like to share what you wrote? (Allow students to share.)
