How to Calculate Leap Year

Firstly, you know what is leap year? One leap year is one that has one day more than a usual year of 365 days, that is, a leap year has 366 days.

In the calendar, the difference between a normal year and a leap year can be seen in the month of February. In a leap year, the month of February has 29 days and not 28.

Leap years occur every 4 years, for example the years 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016 and 2020 are leap years and the next on the list will be the year 2024.

But how do we know whether any given year is a leap year or not? We will see?

How to know if a year is a leap year

To find out if a year is a leap year, we must check if it fits in one of the cases:

Case 1) It is a number divisible by 4, but not divisible by 100.
Case 2) It is a number divisible by 4, by 100 and by 400.

remember that a number is divisible on the other hand when the remainder of the division is zero, that is, when the result of the account is a integer, no comma.

Examples:

The) 1964 is a leap year, as it fits in case 1.

→ 1964 is divisible by 4 (1964 ÷ 4 = 491).

→ 1964 is not divisible by 100 (1964 ÷ 100 = 19.64).

B) 2000 is a leap year, as it fits in case 2.

→ 2000 is divisible by 4 (2000 ÷ 4 = 500).

→ 2000 is divisible by 100 (2000 ÷ 100 = 20).

→ 2000 is divisible by 400 (2000 ÷ 400 = 5).

ç) 1950 it is not a leap year, as it does not fit in either case.

→ 1950 is not divisible by 4 (1950 ÷ 4 = 487.5).

d) 5000 it is not a leap year, as it does not fit in either case.

→ 5000 is divisible by 4 (5000 ÷ 4 = 1250).

→ 5000 is divisible by 100 (5000 ÷ 100 = 50).

→ 5000 is not divisible by 400 (5000 ÷ 400 = 12.5).

Thus, we can define an algorithm to know whether a year is a leap year or not.

Algorithm to know if a year is a leap year

Let's look at an algorithm, that is, a step-by-step guide to find out whether a year is a leap year or not.

Step 1) Check if the year is divisible by 4.

– If it's not divisible by 4, then it's not a leap year.

– If it is divisible by 4, then we go to step 2.

Step 2) Check whether the year is divisible by 100.

– If it is not divisible by 100, then it is a leap year (case 1).

– If it is divisible by 100, go to step 3.

Step 3) Check whether the year is divisible by 400.

– If it is not divisible by 400, then the year is not a leap year.

– If it is divisible by 400, then it is a leap year (case 2).

As we saw, if you want know how to calculate the next leap year, you just need to follow this step by step and check if the year fits or not in cases 1 or 2.
