THE World Health Organization (WHO), in a statement, announced that the coronavirus can become an endemic disease. That's if firm action isn't taken. Even with the eventual vaccine, the challenges to controlling the disease will remain.

WHO also highlighted that the future of the pandemic is in the hands of leaders and society. The organization explained that governments have already managed to prove that the crisis can be controlled.

Soumya Swaminathan, the Organization's chief scientist, indicated that the world might need four or five years to overcome the pandemic. Currently, there are more than 4 million cases almost worldwide.

Michael Ryan, the entity's director of operations, admitted that there is a scenario in which Covid-19 may never disappear and still become another endemic virus in societies.

All support will be needed

The operations director also explains that even with the arrival of a possible vaccine, there is no guarantee that the disease will end soon. Furthermore, he declares that in order to have control, all support will be necessary, being political, social and economic.

Even with the vaccine, the world is far from declaring an end to the pandemic. It is necessary to be clear. It is worth noting that several countries are looking for a way to end this.

Risks to the economy

The WHO also issued another warning regarding the hasty openings of social isolation measures. If this transition is made precipitously, there may be an acceleration in the transmission.

In this case, the evidence will be visible with the accumulation of people who will not survive because of the pandemic. So, if governments reinstate quarantine measures, the economy may not support it.

Micael Ryan further explains that the implementation of quarantines should be understood as something that would strengthen the health system. This is a measure to contain the virus. Despite this, governments must be prepared to act if they identify new outbreaks.

He also stated that countries like Germany, South Korea and China were quick in this action and, therefore, can be considered examples.
