THE Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (Capes), announced, this Wednesday, 15, that more than 850 graduate scholarships will be offered to researchers who intend to develop pandemic solutions.
The idea is part of the Strategic Emergency Program for the Prevention and Combat of Outbreaks, Endemics and Epidemics, which was inaugurated in April 2020. In all, 1,750 places have been offered for postgraduate courses.
According to the president of Capes, Benedito Aguiar, this funding for professionals is very strategic and fundamental for collective health and prevention of other infectious diseases that affect the Brazil.
Distribution of grants
850 graduate scholarships will be offered. Of these, 300 will go to the exact sciences, engineering, technology and multidisciplinary courses.
With this, studies on the development of new technologies for hospital safety will be financed, from forms of production of personal protective equipment (PPE), to analysis and monitoring of outbreaks.
The other 550 scholarships already have two public notices published. The first, for drug and immunology researchers, the second, is aimed at finding innovative measures in telemedicine and computational analysis of medical data.
Drugs and Immunology
Capes has reserved 35 projects, each with 10 vacancies, for research in the area of pharmaceuticals and immunology, totaling 350 opportunities.

The 35 projects will be divided into six research areas, as follows:
- Vaccine development
- Development of quick tests for the new coronavirus
- Antiviral Drug Prototypes
- Immunobiological products
- Detection of diseases in animals and the interrelationships with humans
- In vitro assays for the study of SARS-CoV-2 and drug repositioning

Telemedicine and data analysis
In the second public notice, the grants will be destined to remote care research and large-scale monitoring of epidemics and pandemics. In all, there will be 200 scholarships, divided among 22 projects. Should be created:
- Remote healthcare systems
- Image processing and exam interpretation software (CT scans, x-rays, ultrasound)
- Data analysis tools (using artificial intelligence)
- Epidemic control and prevention techniques
