The Ministry of Education (MEC) announced the release of a free course and fully distance for literacy teachers. The program, which has 40,000 vacancies, will have a total duration of 160 hours and will start on January 11th.
Named Science-Based Literacy (ABC), the course will be taught in the MEC's Virtual Learning Environment (Avamec). There, registered teachers will be able to download reading materials, watch videos and organize study assignments.
About ABC course
In a note, the MEC gave more details of the course. Regarding the content, there will be classes with fundamental notions of emergent literacy – before formal instruction – of learning to read and write, in addition to the difficulties of this process. Information related to the literacy process will also be part of the program.
“The course consists of a theoretical manual, with 24 chapters, prepared by the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the University of Porto, and a Practical Intervention Program, developed by the Center for Research and Intervention in Reading of the Polytechnic Institute of Harbor. The Open University of Portugal was responsible for recording the video classes and producing the subtitles for Brazilian Portuguese”, declared the MEC in a statement.

The partnership between Portuguese institutions and the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (Capes) has been in place since February. The implementation of the distance course appears as a solution during the period of social isolation due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Training in Portugal
In addition to the virtual course, Capes should open new notices so that Brazilian teachers can participate in on-site training in Portugal. For that, the institution foresees an investment of R$ 6.3 million in the next two years.
According to the Minister of Education, Milton Ribeiro, the intention is that the new training of teachers will reflect a high-quality literacy for Brazilian students.
