Exercises on intraspecific ecological relationships

At ecological relationships happen all the time in the same environment, they can occur both between individuals of the same species and between individuals of species many different.

When these interactions take place with individuals of the same species, they are called intraspecific, and when they occur between different species, interspecific.

We prepare a list of exercises on intraspecific ecological relationships so you can test your knowledge on this topic.

You can consult the template or save this exercise list in PDF at the end of the post!

Exercises on intraspecific ecological relationships

1) (UFPI) Of the following types of ecological relationships, the only one that occurs exclusively between organisms of the same species is: (adapted question)

a) tenancy.
b) herbivory.
c) mutualism.
d) society.
e) parasitism.

2) The items below contain examples of various ecological relationships between living things:

I – The association between certain fungi and chlorophyceous algae or cyanobacteria is usually so close that both form a new type of organism, lichen.

II – Several species of bees form highly organized groupings, in which, instinctively, each individual places the survival of the hive above its own.
III – Among some insects of the same species, the weakest or sickest animals are devoured by the healthy ones.
IV – The caravel is a cnidarian that lives floating in the sea and is formed by a group of individuals of the same species that physically live together, sharing the work.

The ecological relationships that are described in the items above are classified, respectively, as:

a) society, colony, cannibalism and mutualism.
b) mutualism, society, cannibalism and colony.
c) commensalism, society, predatism and colony.
d) mutualism, colony, cannibalism and society.
e) protocooperation, colony, predatism and society.

3) The ecological relationships do not always bring benefits to all the organisms involved, being called, in this case, disharmonious ecological relationships. Among the examples below, mark the only alternative where a disharmonious intraspecific relationship is indicated.

the colony.
b) Society.
c) Intraspecific competition.
d) Herbivory.
e) Parasitism.

4) (FATEC) Bees have three social castes: the workers, sterile females that carry out the work of the hive, the queen and the drone, in charge of reproduction. This division of labor characterizes:

a) isomorphic society with harmonic intraspecific relationships.
b) heteromorphic society with harmonic intraspecific relationships.
c) heteromorphous colony with harmonic interspecific relationships.
d) isomorphic colony with harmonic interspecific relationships.
e) heteromorphous colony with harmonic intraspecific relationships.

5) Carefully observe the ecological relationships mentioned below and mark the alternative that correctly indicates an example of an intraspecific relationship.

a) Predation of an insect by a praying mantis.
b) The symbiosis of lichens.
c) Relationship between the hermit crab and sea anemones.
d) Lice and men.
e) Coral colonies.

6) Bees are hive-dwelling animals and have a division of labor and a certain degree of cooperation. In a hive, we can identify different individuals: queens, workers and drones.

Among the alternatives below, mark the name of the ecological relationship performed by the bees.

the colony.
b) Society.
c) Mutualism.
d) Amensalism.
e) Commensalism.

7) Sentence 1: "Organisms of the same species almost always compete for the resources offered by the environment."
Sentence 2: "In some situations, individuals of the same species help each other, exchanging benefits."

The above statements refer, respectively, to intraspecific ecological relationships:

a) intraspecific competition and intraspecific cooperation (societies and colonies).
b) intraspecific competition and mutualism.
c) commensalism and mutualism.
d) interspecific competition and tenancy.
e) colonies and societies.

8) The Portuguese caravel, despite appearing to be just a single individual, is formed by several cnidarians of the same species. Each of these individuals is related to a particular function, and there are those related to reproduction, nutrition and protection.

The Portuguese caravel is an example of which ecological relationship?

the society.
b) Colony.
c) Commensalism.
d) Amensalism.
e) Competition.

9) Often, in the animal world, we see species in which males fight among themselves to be able to reproduce with a female. It is also common, during the breeding season, for males to delimit their territory, informing others that that area has an owner.

This phenomenon is an example of:

a) mutualism.
b) commensalism.
c) competition.
d) society.
e) colony.

10) (PUCCAMP) Consider the statements below regarding population growth factors.

I. Intraspecific competition interferes with population density.
II. Interspecific competition does not influence population growth.
III. One of the limiting factors for population growth is the availability of food, which decreases as population density increases.
IV. Climatic factors influence population growth regardless of its density.

Are only true:

a) I and II.
b) I and IV.
c) II and III.
d) I, III and IV.
e) II, III and IV.
