Going through adolescence is not always an easy task. At the same time the mind is changing and maturing, the person finds himself in a whirlwind of hormones, that affect, in addition to the body, personal relationships and the very way of dealing with yourself and the other.

Amid conflicts with family, tumultuous relationships, feeling of not belonging and difficulty in accepting, people still need to learn to deal with all the difficulties of a period of transition.

Escola Educação selected some films that deal with important issues about adolescence and how it can, at the same time, be extremely difficult and full of fantastic discoveries.

1. The Advantages of Being a Wallflower (2012)

The Perks of Being a Wallflower is an adaptation of the book of the same name, written by author Stephen Chbosky in 1999. Brilliantly starring Logan Lerman, Ezra Miller and Emma Watson, it tells the story of Charlie, who is a depressed teenager trying to get over his best friend's suicide.

Trying to forget the traumas that marked his life, Charlie goes to the first day of school in search of changing the course of his life. Thus, he meets two veterans who accept him and will insert him into a world full of discoveries and new relationships. Through this journey, Charlie tries to get to know himself, while yearning to leave the past behind.

2. The Best Things in the World (2010)

One of the Brazilian films on the list, the feature The Best Things in the World, by filmmaker Laís Bodanzky (same as Bicho de Sete Cabeças) is capable of providing a series of reflections on this phase.

Set in a school in São Paulo where the students come from the middle class, the young Mano (Francisco Miguez), while passing through problems in her personal life, she sees her family structure collapse when her father comes out as a homosexual and leaves home to live a new relationship

Bullying, revenge porn, first sexual intercourse, depression, suicide, prejudice and family relationships during adolescence are some of the issues the film raises to be debated.

3. Mean Girls (2004)

Mean Girls, like most American teen movies, portrays the hardships of “high school” and how people can be cruel to those who are considered different.

Cady (Lindsay Lohan) is a homeschooled young woman who has just returned from African countries with her parents. She starts studying at a traditional college. At first she befriends other peers, also excluded, but her ambition is to be part of the most popular girls' group.

She reaches the goal, but at this point realizes that things are not quite the way she expected them to be.

The film deals with important issues, aroused mainly in women from an early age. Female competition is an even more fierce reality during adolescence, since in this period the search for acceptance and belonging is even greater than in other stages of life.

Another Brazilian on the list, the feature Hoje Eu Quero Voltar Alone comes from the very similarly named short Eu Não Quero Voltar Alone, which was so successful that it ended up being extended.

The drama tells the story of Leonardo (Guilherme Lobo), a young man with visual impairment, who is bullied at school and has only one friend, Giovana (Tess Amorim). The story starts to change with the arrival of a new colleague, Gabriel (Fabio Audi).

Soon the three approach and become friends. However, between Leonardo and Gabriel new feelings begin to emerge. The film is mainly about representation, in a very poetic and not clichéd way.

5. The Lie (2010)

Olive (Emma Stone) is one of the students who go unnoticed in the daily life of an American school, full of stereotypes typical of these films. Seeking to fit the standards and accepting, she lies about having sex with a colleague. The story takes a turn and she is considered the biggest promiscuous in the school.

The lie takes on unimaginable proportions when other young people, also unpopular, seek Olive's help to lie about sex, and thus get on the popular people's radar.

The film starring Emma Stone is an excellent starting point for the discussion of “slut-shaming”, which is the practice of using a woman's sexuality to embarrass her, which happens mainly during the adolescence.

6. Club of Five (1985)

Clube dos Cinco is a movie classic. With many characteristics of teen cinema in the 80s, the production still has a lot to teach, especially in relation to respect for difference.

The John Hughes film has Molly Ringwald as one of the protagonists, and takes place in an American school. Five students with different personalities are required to be together in a detention administered by a teacher. During confinement they realize that not everything is exactly as it appears.

The movie trailer itself, purposefully, by classifying the characters as “a genius, a beauty, an athlete, a rebel and a recluse” gives us an insight into the possible discussions raised by the long.

7. Almost 18 (2017)

This movie can be considered the portrait of a generation. Starring the excellent Hailee Steinfeld, who plays the young Nadine, he is able to bring together several questions about adolescence in a single work.

Nadine is a high school student who finds it difficult to be part of her social cycle, precisely because of the lack of identification. This situation gets worse when your best and only friend gets involved in a relationship with her older brother.

Almost 18 deals with important issues, such as the feeling of not belonging, the difficulties in dealing with their own bodies and the transition from adolescence to adulthood.
