Zumbi dos Palmares was one of the great symbols of the fight against slavery in Brazil.
He was the last leader of the Quilombo dos Palmares and he was killed after his hiding place was denounced, on 20 November 1695, the date that gave rise to the Black conscience day.
Born in 1655, in the state of alagoas, Zumbi was captured, even though he was born free, at around seven years of age. Later, he was handed over to a Catholic priest, who baptized him Francis.
With the priest, Zumbi learned the Portuguese language and the Catholic religion. Despite this, at age 15, he flees to Quilombo dos Palmares, where he would be attacked by Portuguese soldiers.
At the time, Ganga Zumba was the leader of the quilombo. After his murder, Zumbi succeeded him.
Death of Zumbi dos Palmares
Zumbi took over the leadership of Quilombo dos Palmares at the age of 25. He went on to lead the resistance against government troops and showed himself to be very skilled in engineering confrontations.
Despite Zumbi's organization and courage, in 1694, the pioneers Domingos Jorge Velho and Bernardo Vieira de Melo mounted an attack. In the event, the “Cerca do monkey”, the seat of the quilombo, was totally destroyed.

Zumbi fled the scene wounded, but one of his captains, Antônio Soares, in exchange for fifty thousand reis, gave the leader's location to the Portuguese crown.
Then, on November 20, 1695, at the age of 40, Zumbi dos Palmares was beheaded by Captain Furtado de Mendonça.
The warrior's head was exposed in a public square as a way to end the idea of zombie immortality.
Dandara dos Palmares
Dandara dos Palmares she was a black warrior and companion of Zumbi. She dominated capoeira and also devised strategies to resist attacks against Quilombo dos Palmares.
There isn't much data about her, but for many historians, Dandara was one of the greatest representatives and leaders of the quilombo, as she participated in everything that happened at the place, including the clashes.
Dandara dos Palmares died on February 6, 1694, in Pernambuco. She would have thrown herself from a quarry so as not to surrender to the military, preferring death to slavery.
