Who was Martin Luther?


Martin Luther, born in Eisleben, Germany, in the year 1483, he was an Augustinian monk recognized as the propellant of Protestant Reformation, which gave rise to Protestantism.

Luther criticized the power of the Catholic Church as well as the misbehavior of the clergy. His ideals spread across several territories, such as Netherlands, Scandinavian countries, UK and part of France.

Who was Martin Luther?

Martin Luther had a strict upbringing, with Catholic principles. As a result of his father's wishes, the religious began studying law at the University of Erfurt.

One day in 1505, while returning to his parents' home, Luther was nearly struck by lightning. Out of fear, he made a promise that if he survived the storm, he would become a monk. With that, he studied theology and started teaching.

During the period, many thinkers were already discussing the need for a reform in the Catholic church.

Luther debated with his students 95 theses of his authorship that criticized the lack of training of the clergy and the excessive wealth of the church. The document was nailed to the door of the Church of All Saints on October 31, 1517, in Wittemberg.

The attitude was considered the foundation of the Protestant movement. Despite this, it is important to emphasize that Martinho would only have fulfilled the requirements of academic debates. At the time, there was no intention of founding a new church.

Martin Luther's arguments were against everything the Catholic faithful believed. For this reason, in 1520, Pope Leo X condemned most of the 95 Theses. Luther, on learning this, burned the document in public.

Years later, Luther was asked by the pope to recant. However, he refused, and so he was considered a heretic.

So Martin took refuge in Wartburg Castle and began his Bible translation.

The religious wars between Catholicism and Protestants only ended in 1555, thanks to the Peace agreement. of Augsburg, which gave each ruler the freedom to choose his religion and that of his subjects.

Martin Luther's Death

Some believe that Martin Luther was murdered as a result of persecution. In 1521, with the Edict Worms, the theologian was considered outlaw. Therefore, anyone could kill him without suffering consequences.

Despite this, what is certain is that, although the cause is uncertain, Luther died at home, accompanied by doctors, on February 18, 1546, at the age of 63 years.
