Coronavirus Can Cause Disease Beyond Covid-19: Myth or Truth?

O coronavirus is a family of virus that cause respiratory infections such as Covid-19 that can present clinical pictures that vary between asymptomatic and severe respiratory failure.

Initially, the coronavirus was seen as a cause of severe flu or pneumonia, but Sars-CoV-2, the technical name for the new coronavirus, has proven to be much more complex.

In an interview with BBC News Brasil, epidemiologist Paulo Lotufo, who is a full professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of São Paulo (USP), explained that in many countries hospitals are receiving more cases of patients with cardiac and renal complications caused by coronavirus.

According to Professor Lotufo, this may be happening because the coronavirus acts on receptors associated with Cardiovascular system, present in small arteries, and causes heart attacks and strokes in patients who have no history of cardiovascular problems.

Because of this, the coronavirus can also be associated with an increase in cases of thrombosis and hemorrhages, as it worsens the patient's clotting time.

In recent studies, possibilities have been raised that the coronavirus can lead children to have the Toxic Shock Syndrome, a diseaserare disease that can develop acute renal failure.

Symptoms and advancement of the new coronavirus

The recent associations of coronavirus with other diseases make the monitoring of the advance of the pandemic of Covid-19 gets even more complicated.

Lotufo told BBC News Brasil that many people could be dying infected without presenting the main Covid-19 symptoms such as fever and shortness of breath, so these patients are not tested and are not part of the Statistics.

For prof. Lotufo, it is a myth that the coronavirus is exclusively a cause of pneumonia and other respiratory problems, as it can be associated with triggering other diseases.
