Caius Pescennius Niger Justus

Supposed Roman Emperor (193-194) born in Aquino, in central Italy and descendant of the agrarian gentry. He gained military renown at the beginning of Commodus' reign in the campaign against the Dacians, ancient people of the Thracian family, established between the Danube River and the Carpathians. After a consulate (191), he became governor of Syria at the end of Commodus' reign. A rival of Didius Julianus and pretender to the imperial throne, he was proclaimed emperor by his troops after the death of Pertinax (193).

His power base was in the provinces of the Orient, which had Byzantium at its center. This proclamation was not accepted by the Senate, which declared him a public enemy and endorsed the march against him (193), commanded by the recognized emperor Septimus Severus. During Severus' stay in the East, the western government was in charge of co-emperor Tenth Clodius Albinus, who would later come into conflict, also with Severus.

The Eastern usurper was defeated by Severian troops, after a campaign of three great battles: Cizimus, Nicaea, and It, fled to Antioch (194), but was captured by Publius Cornelius Anullinus, general of Severe. Arrested, he had his head cut off and sent to Severus in Byzantium. After returning to Rome, Anullinus would still be urban prefect (196) and ordinary consul (199).
