Located in Oceania, more precisely in the region called Micronesia, the territory of Nauru consists of a small island in the Pacific Ocean. The country has no land borders, being relatively close to the Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Federation of Micronesian States and Tuvalu.

Nauru, with a territorial extension of just 21 square kilometers, is the third smallest country in the world – only the Vatican and Monaco have smaller territory. The nation is also one of the least populated, with about 9,900 inhabitants. Yaren, the national capital, is inhabited by less than 650 people.

Nauru's economy is underdeveloped. Phosphate exploration has been the main source of income in recent decades. However, reserves are depleting and there is a need to diversify activities. With few areas under cultivation, the country is forced to import most of its food, in addition to drinking water.
