THE Water is one of the most important substances found in our body, being responsible for several fundamental processes for our survival, such as the regulation of temperature and the elimination and transport of substances. Due to the inability to store this substance, we must often replace it to ensure the proper functioning of the body.
Sometimes the loss of water by the body, whether through sweat or feces, for example, is greater than its replacement. The low availability of water, together with the considerable loss of mineral salts, generates a situation known as dehydration.
Dehydration is a serious problem that leads people to death every year, children are usually the most affected. The causes are varied, however, in most cases, the problem is related to acute diarrhea. Other causes that can be described are insufficient fluid intake, intense vomiting, perspiration excessive use of diuretics, severe burns and bleeding.
The diagnosis of dehydration is made mainly by observing the
symptoms of the patient. A dehydrated person has a lot of thirst, dry mouth and skin, dry lips, sunken eyes, a fast heartbeat, and a small amount of tears, urine, and sweat. In addition, it is common for the patient to have weakness, fatigue, headaches and dizziness episodes. As the condition worsens, decreased physical and mental performance, loss of consciousness, seizures and death may occur. After diagnosis, the doctor will assess the severity of the condition. Dehydration is usually divided into three main degrees: mild, moderate and severe. In mild and moderate cases, the treatment is done by administering water and the patient must be kept in a pleasant temperature environment. In the case of babies younger than six months, rehydration is done with milk. In severe cases, the recommendation is that serum be made available to the patient.
