Noun syntactic function

 Review the nouns highlighted in the following sentences:

(1) Peter got up early.

(2) I will be yours friend.

Note that, in (1), the noun plays the role of the subject of the clause. In (2), the noun acts as a predicative of the subject. Thus, we can see that this class of words, the noun, can exercise different syntactic functions within sentences. It is these functions that we will study in this text.

The noun can perform the following syntactic functions:

The) Subject:

Example:

João is silent.

B) Predicative:

  • of the subject:

Example:

She is the headmistress.

  • of the object:

    Do not stop now... There's more after the advertising ;)

Examples:

I called him friend.

they elected her headmistress.

ç) Direct object:

Example:

Maria sells books.

d) indirect object:

Example:

We like to song classic.

and) nominal complement:

Example:

The news of the crime it spread quickly.

f) Adverbial Adjunct:

Example:

lived with Peter for two years.

g) liability agent:

Example:

Before leaving the bank, he was seen by a witness.

H) I bet:

Example:

Is it over there, Maria, his eyes were alert.

i) Vocative:

Example:

God bless you my daughter!
