Saga is a word that means legend or adventure, and consists of descriptions of famous character stories of a particular culture or religion. The sagas can also be in the form of song, which reveals the heroic acts.
The saga is one of narrative genres, and it is usually in prose, although there are some sagas in verse. The earliest sagas recounted the epic stories of medieval times in Nordic countries such as Iceland and Norway.
Initially, the sagas were transmitted orally and constituted the foundation of Scandinavian literature. It started around 1120 in Iceland, but later expanded to other Scandinavian nations. It reached its peak in the 13th century and spread until the end of the 14th century.
Three types of sagas are known: the real ones, the genealogical ones and the historical ones. Later, this literary genre also came to include the literary theme of chivalry and the tradition of European legends.
Nowadays, the concept of the saga has changed slightly, and a series of books can also be known as a saga. Long stories, full of adventures and incidents are also considered sagas. There are several popular sagas in cinema, such as the Star Wars saga (Star Wars) and Star Trek saga.
