Grenada is a Central American country located in the Caribbean Sea. Its territory, of volcanic origin, has mountainous relief and tropical forest. It has maritime borders with Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (to the northeast), Trinidad and Tobago (to the southeast) and Venezuela (to the southwest).
The country gained its independence in 1974. Grenada has 90% of the territory and population (predominantly black) concentrated on the island of the same name. The nation also includes the portion of the Grenadines Islands, inhabited by 10% of the population.
The local economy is extremely dependent on agricultural exports and tourism. Another important activity is fishing, which was developed with technical assistance from Cuba. Agriculture is responsible for 25% of the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and employs around 35% of the national population. The soil is very fertile, where bananas, sugar cane, tropical fruits and coconut are grown. The country is one of the world's largest producers of nutmeg.
