Curiosities about the World Cup in the period 1970-1982

The World Cup in 70 was a milestone for Brazil: winning the tri-championship with the most beautiful team you've ever seen play doesn't happen to just anyone. But this you already know. Let's continue with the trivia session, so you can discover something you don't know yet. About the 1970 World Cup and some others...

- 1970 World Cup:

- The implementation of the red and yellow cards took place in this championship. Until then, all the commands provided by the referees were verbal, which made it difficult for the interlocutor to understand when he spoke another language. Interestingly, the first red card only came in the 1974 World Cup, with Chilean Carlos Caszely;

- Another milestone happened in this cup: the inclusion of player substitutions during the match;

- First tournament to be broadcast on television to the world. By “world” we mean 50 countries;

- It was also the first World Cup to have a football made exclusively for the championship. The manufacturer was Adidas, with the “Telstar” ball.

- 1974 World Cup:

- The first punishment in World Cups for the use of doping took place. The “rookie” was Ernst Jean Joseph, player from Haiti;

- Each player from the Zaire national team (now the Democratic Republic of Congo), for having classified the team to compete in the championship, won a car and a government house. There are rumors that, after three defeats, and the consequent return home, the gifts have been confiscated;

- But the history of this year's Uruguayan national team is perhaps the most intriguing of all. Uruguay players would board on a certain day, in the afternoon. They could not board at this time and the delegation changed the boarding to the night period. The plane that left in the afternoon, without the crew, crashed and killed 107 passengers.

- 1978 World Cup:

- It was the first time that sports brand logos were stamped on the team's uniforms. It can almost be said that this is where the commodification of football begins;

- An Argentine fan almost had a heart attack – literally speaking – during the match between Argentina and the Netherlands. When the Dutch striker kicked a ball into the crossbar, the fan started heart failure, but they say he got better in time to see Argentina win the title;

- Argentina, which at the time was under the dictatorial regime of Jorge Rafael Videla, was suffering bloody reprisals by its dictator. In a protest movement, when the Dutch athletes went to receive their honor for second place, they turned to the dictator, who was present;

- Sunday Times, an English newspaper, claimed that the Argentine delegation was manipulating the anti-doping tests on its players, having hired a man just to urinate. However, no one knows if the information is really true.

- 1982 World Cup:

- This Cup was marked by the victory with the biggest rout to date. The 10X1 score between Hungary and El Savador consecrated, curiously, the El Salvadorian striker, who managed to score a goal in favor of his team;

- It was the first championship that almost made a tie-breaker through penalties. Although it had already been included in the rules in the previous World Cup, it was only in the dispute between Germany and France in the 1982 World Cup that this fact occurred for the first time;

- It was the debut of a non-European judge in the final of a world football tournament. The unprecedented case was the call of the Brazilian Arnaldo César Coelho – current commentator for Rede Globo – to referee a game between Italy and East Germany.
