December 10 – International Human Rights Day

Annually, on December 10th, the International Day of Human Rights is celebrated., date on which the General Assembly of the United Nations made the Universal Declaration of Human Rights official.

Creation of the International Day of Human Rights

The United Nations General Assembly adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights at the Palais de Chaillot, Paris, France, on December 10, 1948. All nation states (at the time 58 members) and organizations with an interest in the Drights Hone year were asked to mark December 10 as Human Rights Day.

This happened in a meeting held at the headquarters of the United Nations (UN), on December 4, 1950.

Commemoration of Human Rights Day

Each year Human Rights Day has a theme. A significant portion of the chosen themes refers to the need for dissemination of information about human rights and/or regarding the importance of promoting human rights education.

Are carried out all over the world:

  • advertising campaigns in different media,
  • cultural events,
  • marches,
  • popular demonstrations,
  • exhibitions with the purpose of informing the citizens on the need to guarantee the fundamental rights contained in the Declaration.

It is a date on which celebrations are welcome, however, which is essentially aimed at clarification regarding the need to claim effective actions From States and of the society for the fulfillment of the commitments assumed with the guarantee of civil, political, social and environmental rights foreseen in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Universal Declaration of Human Rights

In day December 10, 1948, the United Nations (UN) established the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The document was drawn up between January 1947 and December 1948.

The goal was to form a basis for human rights around the world and represented a significant change of direction from events such as the Second World War and the colonialism that prevailed at the time.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is considered the most translated document of modern history. It is available in more than 360 languages, and new translations are still being prepared.
