Ruth Benedict, right Fulton

A New York-born American anthropologist whose theories have become profoundly influential in the study of the relationships between culture and personality. Graduated in English Literature, she received her Ph.D. from Columbia University, with the thesis The Concept of the Guardian Spirit in North America (1923), about an omnipresent myth among American Indians, and guided by Franz Good.
She initially wrote poetry until the following decade (1930), under the pseudonym Anne Singleton, while researching science social, seeking to develop the concept that cultures were integrated constructions of intellectual, religious and aesthetic. She died in New York City, her most important publications being Zuñi Mythology (1935), on folklore and religion of American and Canadian Indian tribes, Patterns of Culture (1934) on concepts of property, religious beliefs and rituals, Race: Science and Politics (1940) and The Chrysanthemum and the Sword (1946) on culture Japanese.
