After all, which is the correct way, fix or fix? Before answering this question, which is so common among Portuguese speakers, we have a question to ask: do you know what homophony is?
The word homophony is formed from two Greek radicals: homo = equal and phone = sound. According to the grammar of the Portuguese language, homophony it is the phonetic equality between two words or between a word and an expression. In writing, homophone words have the same pronunciation, however, they have different spellings. But what does this have to do with our topic today? Everything! Do you know why? The words concert and repair are a classic example of homophone words.
Both ways, concert and repair, they exist and they are correct, it is enough to know when and how to use each one of them, since, despite being so similar, they keep in themselves very different meanings. The word concert, as a noun, refers mainly to a musical session, to the combination of sounds coming from of instrumentalists, but it can also be used in the sense of establishing a pact or agreement with someone. The word
repair, also as a noun, refers to the repair or repair of something that is damaged. Look at the examples:O concert of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Minas Gerais will be held at the Palácio das Artes.
O repair of the car will be done by the dealership.
As verbs, concert and repair are forms of verbs fix and to repair in the 1st person singular of the present indicative:
Verb to fix - Present tense: Do not stop now... There's more after the advertising ;) Me concert |
Verb to repair - Present tense: Me repair |
Examples:
Me concert with the ceremonial all the preparations for the wedding.
Me repair your computer as soon as you have time.
See now other examples of homophone words from the Portuguese language:
check (money order) |
check (chess move) |
trip (noun) |
travel (flexion of the verb to travel) |
belt (noun) |
feel (flexion of the verb feel) |
ascend (ascend, raise) |
ignite (turn on, set fire) |
saddle (can be noun and verb) |
cell (noun) |
It is not always easy to differentiate the cases where we should use a letter from the cases where we should use another, even more when they have the same sound, as with the letters c and s in this situation specific. These differences are fundamentally governed by the history of words, so there are some rules that can help us in writing, making our doubts about the orthography. Good studies!
