Measures - Measures. Units of Measure (measures) in English

In English, the measurement units are different from those we use in Portuguese. For example, to refer to someone's height, use "foot” (foot) and “inch” (inch), instead of meters and centimeters.

1 foot = 12 inches = 30. 48 centimeters (1 foot = 12 inches = 30, 48 centimeters)

1 inch = 2.54 centimeters (1 inch = 2.54 centimeters)

Ex.:

Bob is 5 feet 10 inches. (Bob is 5 feet 10 inches or Bob is 1m 77cm tall).

You must be 5 ft to go on this ride. (You must be 5ft or 1m and 52cm to go on this toy).

Note: We use "foot” (foot) for singular. For the plural, we must use "feet" (foot). The abbreviation for this measure is “ft” and for “inches” is “in”.

When referring to distance, use "mile” (mile), instead of “Kilometer” (kilometer). one mile equals approximately 1km and 600m.

Ex.:

Ted and Carol can run two miles without getting tired. (Ted and Carol can run 2 miles or 3km and 200m without getting tired).

My house is 5 miles from here. (My house is 5 miles or 8 km from here).

To indicate weight it is possible to use “ounce” (ounce) and “pound” (pound).

1 ounce = 28.35 grams (1 ounce = 28.35 grams)

1 pound = 16 ounces = 453.59 grams (1 pound = 16 ounces = 453.59 grams).

Ex.: I want an 8-ounce chicken steak, please. (I want an 8 oz chicken steak or I want a 226 gram chicken steak).

Do not stop now... There's more after the advertising ;)

Mary had a baby girl. She weights nearly 6 pounds. (Mary had a girl. It weighs approximately 6 pounds or It weighs approximately 2kg and 720 grams).

My grandfather is extremely fat. He is 249 pounds. He needs to lose weight. (My grandfather is extremely fat. He's 249 pounds or 112 kg and 94 grams. He needs to lose weight).

Note: "Ounce” is a measure that can be abbreviated to “oz”.
