Meaning of Solidarity (What it is, Concept and Definition)

Solidarity is the feminine noun that indicates the quality of solidarity and a feeling of identification with the suffering of others.

The word solidarity comes from French solidarity which can also refer to a reciprocal responsibility.

In many cases, solidarity means not only recognizing the delicate situation of a person or social group, but also the act of helping these helpless people. Ex: After the earthquake in Haiti, several countries sent financial aid as a show of solidarity.

In the scope legal, solidarity can refer to an agreement that one element has a sense of obligation towards another element. It usually happens when there are several debtors linked by certain interests, whose creditor can collect payment. In this case, it is common to speak of tax solidarity, which is contemplated in articles 124 and 125 of the National Tax Code (CTN).

Solidarity and Sociology

According to French sociologist Émile Durkheim, there are two types of solidarity: a mechanical and organic.

Mechanical solidarity expresses the similarity between individuals and adjusts the details of the connection between those same individuals. This type of solidarity is manifested through religion, family, customs and traditions, that is, aspects that contribute to the social bond.

Organic solidarity also aims to improve the social bond, but this happens through the social division of labor. In this case, the differentiation between individuals through work results in solidarity, when there is interdependence and the recognition that everyone is important.
