Located in the far east of the Middle East, Oman is formed by two discontinuous territories (the Musadem peninsula is located in the UAE). The country has a strategic geographic position: at the entrance to the Persian Gulf. The larger territory is limited to the United Arab Emirates (to the northwest), Saudi Arabia (to the west), Yemen (to the south), the Gulf of Oman (to the north) and the Arabian Sea (to the east).
The national economy is based on the production and export of oil and natural gas. These two products are responsible for approximately 85% of exports, a fact that strengthens the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). However, the country has diversified its economy as oil reserves will run out. Its political stability has provided foreign investments in industrial modernization.
Oman has managed to obtain evolutions in some social aspects, such as, for example, the rate of infant mortality, which is in constant decline and currently stands at 12 deaths per thousand born alive. However, some problems persist: the illiteracy rate remains high: 16%.
