Aspect of the Bahian population

Located in the Northeast region, the state of Bahia has a population of 14,016,906, according to data from the 2010 Demographic Census, carried out by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). Its territorial extension is 564,830,859 km2, divided into 417 municipalities.
Demographic density is 24.8 inhab/km², and population growth is 0.7% per year. It is the largest population in the Northeast and the fourth largest in the country. The male population corresponds to 49% and the female to 51%. The life expectancy of Bahians has increased every year, currently it is over 70 years of life.
The people of Bahia are known for their joy, receptivity, musicality and cultural diversity. The population is well mixed, made up of Indians, Europeans and Africans. The state has the largest relative number of blacks and mulattos in Brazil, and African culture has a large influence on music, cuisine and religion, celebrated in the festivals of Nosso Senhor do Bonfim and Yemanja.
The capital, Salvador, has 2,675,656 inhabitants, is the third most populous capital in Brazil, just behind São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Other cities with a large population concentration in Bahia are: Feira de Santana (556,642), Vitória da Conquista (306.866), Camaçari (242.970), Itabuna (204.667), Juazeiro (197.965), Ilhéus (184.236).


Across the state, 53% of households do not have a sewage system. The infant mortality rate is approximately 31.4 deaths per thousand children born alive. The illiteracy rate is approximately 16.7% among inhabitants aged 15 and over. A quarter of the population lives on up to one minimum wage, while less than 1% of Bahians earn more than 20 minimum wages.
The State's Human Development Index (HDI) is 0.742, occupying the 19th place in the ranking of Brazilian states, and the first among the states in the Northeast Region.
